class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Good to Know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>Despite its long history, H\u00e9v\u00edz is a tiny town with mostly modern buildings, lots of private houses, and small hotels. Before that, it was just a village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, the permanent population is around 5,000 people, but during high season it easily triples thanks to tourists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Important:<\/p>\n<cite>You can visit H\u00e9v\u00edz and its thermal lake all year round \u2014 winter is actually one of the best times! Winters in Hungary are mild; in January the average temperature is around +3 to +5\u00b0C. The answer is simple: overall, H\u00e9v\u00edz is slightly more expensive than other regions of Hungary, mainly when it comes to lodging. For everything else, prices are about average, similar to Budapest. Renting a car in Hungary is pleasant, safe, and gives you the freedom to explore many more amazing places than public transport would allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/car-rental-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1020\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Car rental in Hungary: personal experience, pitfalls<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no transport issues either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regular buses (routes 1188, 1193, 1194) run from Budapest to H\u00e9v\u00edz. The trip takes 2\u20133 hours depending on the route, with 5\u201310 departures per day. The nearest one is in Keszthely. You can take a train from Budapest to Keszthely for \u20ac10\u201312, then continue by local bus or minibus (6 km, departures every 20 minutes). It\u2019s the biggest town on the lake and, unlike H\u00e9v\u00edz, has lovely medieval architecture, palaces, and plenty to see for history lovers. There are also many apartments within private houses, where the owners live in one part and rent out another with a separate entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/themes\/maktub\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/heviz-4.jpg\" alt=\"heviz hungary\" class=\"wp-image-1867\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It\u2019s not uncommon for such guesthouses to have their own small restaurant with delicious home-style food.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few important things to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you stay in a hotel, you usually won\u2019t have a kitchen \u2014 at best, a kettle in your room. Choose an option with breakfast included, as most caf\u00e9s in H\u00e9v\u00edz are closed in the morning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need a kitchen, look specifically for apartments in the private sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The largest collection of hotels, guesthouses, and apartments in H\u00e9v\u00edz can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/trip.tp.st\/0EGi5HrH\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/trip.tp.st\/0EGi5HrH\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trip.com<\/a>. Most places serve European cuisine \u2014 pasta, pizza, Austrian sausages \u2014 but you\u2019ll also find authentic Hungarian dishes. Below are a few of my personal dinner favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the main square (which also serves as the main parking area) there\u2019s a cluster of cozy Hungarian restaurants. They pour local house wine and always have goulash and p\u00f6rk\u00f6lt on the menu. There are about six or seven restaurants in a row. One of the best is <strong>Kocsi Cs\u00e1rda<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/G8pn3euDmwnvYGhg7\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/G8pn3euDmwnvYGhg7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">46.792000240217384, 17.191948811658456<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll also find several <strong>l\u00e1ngos<\/strong> stalls around town \u2014 a beloved Hungarian street food made from fried dough topped with cheese and sauce. Absolutely delicious! The lake is especially popular among people with arthritis and other joint conditions; around 80% of visitors are seniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lake reaches a <strong>depth of 38 meters<\/strong>, and its thermal spring lies directly at the center, beneath the main structure on stilts \u2014 the building you see in most photos.
