All road signs are either identical or intuitively understandable to any driver. Here are the key points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Speed limits:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In urban areas: <strong>50 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outside urban areas: <strong>90 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On highways and toll roads: <strong>110 or 130 km\/h<\/strong>, depending on the sign (see photo below for clarification).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Headlights:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low beam headlights must be on <strong>at all times<\/strong> outside urban areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within urban areas, headlights are not required during daylight hours, but I personally always keep them on for safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seat belts:<\/strong> All passengers must wear seat belts, including those in the back seat. The fine for not wearing a seat belt ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 forints (\u20ac50\u2013100), and it is paid by the vehicle owner. If the car is a rental, the fine amount will be deducted from the deposit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile phones:<\/strong> Talking on the phone is only allowed with a <strong>hands-free system<\/strong> or loudspeaker.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fog lights:<\/strong> Using fog lights when there is no fog is <strong>punishable by a fine<\/strong>, so don\u2019t forget to turn them off when not needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driving side:<\/strong> Right-hand traffic, as in most of Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driver\u2019s license:<\/strong> A standard <strong>plastic driver\u2019s license<\/strong> with English translations is sufficient for renting a car in Hungary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/themes\/maktub\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/10\/road-hungary-6.jpg\" alt=\"traffic rules hungary\" class=\"wp-image-496\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Important Traffic Rules in Hungary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to fines, the situation is completely different, and there are some important things you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Useful to know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>Until mid-2023, Hungary had one of the most lenient speeding policies in the EU. Officially, drivers could exceed the limit by <strong>+15 km\/h<\/strong> without consequences. Speed cameras only issued fines for violations over <strong>+21 km\/h<\/strong>. However, a new law took effect in mid-2023, instantly making Hungary one of the strictest countries in the EU regarding speeding.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, <strong>not all speed cameras have been reprogrammed<\/strong> to reflect the new law, but the transition is in progress. I strongly advise against speeding. You will notice that Hungarian drivers are extremely calm, slow, and law-abiding\u2014sometimes frustratingly so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Officially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exceeding the speed limit by just 1 km\/h is now considered a violation and is recorded by speed cameras.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The minimum fine for exceeding the speed limit by 1 km\/h is \u20ac90.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repeat offenders within a year can face fines of \u20ac200 or even \u20ac500.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parking fines range from \u20ac10 to \u20ac100.<\/strong> If paid within the first two weeks, significant discounts may apply. However, this does not apply to speeding violations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice: <strong>Just don\u2019t speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, driving exactly <strong>50 km\/h<\/strong> in an empty city might be frustrating, but <strong>\u20ac100 is still \u20ac100.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_are_two_types_of_speed_cameras\"><\/span>There are two types of speed cameras:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Overhead gantries<\/strong> with separate cameras for each lane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fixed cameras<\/strong> on poles along the roadside (similar to those in other countries).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are <strong>not always warning signs<\/strong> before speed cameras.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When present, the signs are <strong>small<\/strong> and easy to miss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/themes\/maktub\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/hungary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/10\/road-hungary-7-1024x596.jpg\" alt=\"speed cameras hungary\" class=\"wp-image-497\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Look for the <strong>&#8220;Traffic Control&#8221;<\/strong> sign before speed cameras.
