The portions are large, and you won\u2019t leave the table hungry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/maldives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/cuisine-12.jpg\" alt=\"what to try in the maldives food\" class=\"wp-image-2537\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">For example, <strong>reef fish grilled (700\u2013800g)<\/strong>, <strong>potatoes<\/strong>, and <strong>fish and chips<\/strong>, with two teas, all for <strong>300 MVR = $27 <\/strong>(this includes all taxes and tips).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few specific details about taxes and tips that you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GST (Goods and Services Tax)<\/strong>: This is a tax similar to VAT. It is added to the price of everything everywhere. Often, menu prices are already <strong>inclusive of GST<\/strong>, which is great. If the price does not include GST, there should be a note at the bottom of the menu. In that case, the price will be higher on your bill by the amount of this tax.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On local islands, the GST rate is <strong>8%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On resorts, the GST rate is <strong>17%<\/strong>. The same <strong>17% GST<\/strong> applies at restaurants in larger hotels on local islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tips<\/strong>: Tipping is appreciated in the Maldives, and in many cases, it will already be included in the bill. Here&#8217;s the key detail:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your bill includes an <strong>SC (Service Charge)<\/strong>, this is considered the tip. Therefore, there is no need to leave an extra tip. Typically, the service charge is <strong>10%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If <strong>SC is 0<\/strong>, then tipping is optional, though the staff will certainly appreciate it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/maldives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/cuisine-13.jpg\" alt=\"tipping in the maldives\" class=\"wp-image-2538\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In the first example, the bill includes both the <strong>GST<\/strong> and <strong>SC<\/strong>. The bill was handwritten, and they didn\u2019t calculate the GST. Most likely, the GST is included in the price. Importantly, there was no <strong>SC<\/strong>, so in this case, it\u2019s customary to leave a tip.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite>In total, these two taxes on local islands amount to <strong>18%<\/strong> (10% service charge + 8% GST). If they are not included, expect your bill to increase by <strong>18%<\/strong>. On resorts or restaurants with <strong>17% GST<\/strong>, the bill will increase by <strong>27%<\/strong> (17% + 10%).<br>I personally prefer dining at places where these two taxes are already included in the price\u2014it\u2019s transparent, and no additional tipping is necessary.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maldivian food is both <strong>delicious and healthy<\/strong>, and you will quickly learn that <strong>tuna<\/strong> is the star of the cuisine. You can have tuna for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for traditional Maldivian cuisine, I personally prefer it over other Asian cuisines.
