Tourism on Maafushi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand why this island is so popular, let\u2019s look at a little context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1972, the Maldives opened to international tourism. But due to the country\u2019s strict Islamic laws at the time, tourists were not allowed to stay on islands inhabited by locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, private resort islands were developed\u2014exclusive and luxurious, and often costing $5,000, $10,000, $20,000 or more per stay. This is how the Maldives earned its image as a millionaire\u2019s playground, seemingly out of reach for average travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That changed in 2009, when the government introduced a major tourism reform. Locals were finally allowed to open guesthouses and hotels on inhabited islands, and tourists were permitted to stay outside of the resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/maldives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/maafushi-1.jpg\" alt=\"maafushi local island\" class=\"wp-image-3645\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There are about 3-4 swings like this on Maafushi. Everywhere there&#8217;s a beautiful ocean and the sign &#8220;Maldives&#8221; \ud83d\ude42 I don&#8217;t know of any island without such swings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Interesting fact:<\/p>\n<cite>There is only one global restriction left today: alcohol is allowed on resorts, but strictly prohibited on local islands. You can&#8217;t buy it here. And with no real competition at the time, its popularity skyrocketed. That\u2019s one reason why it\u2019s still one of the most visited islands today. But believe me\u2014these days, it wouldn\u2019t even make the <em>top 30<\/em> list of the best local islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pros_and_Cons_of_Maafushi\"><\/span>Pros and Cons of Maafushi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the no-fluff truth. There are only <strong>three real advantages<\/strong> to staying on Maafushi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Proximity to Mal\u00e9 and the airport<\/strong> \u2013 just 30 km away. By Maldivian standards, that&#8217;s very close\u2014you can reach the island in under an hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Affordability<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s one of the cheapest local islands. I\u2019ll go into details on costs later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Well-developed infrastructure<\/strong> \u2013 plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops, souvenir stalls, accommodation options, and even a hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>The Paradox:<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>Most budget travelers choose Maafushi because it\u2019s cheap and easy to get to. But they completely overlook nearby local islands that are just as accessible and affordable, yet <strong>25 times better<\/strong> in terms of nature and experience.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travel-4-fun.com\/maldives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/maafushi-2.jpg\" alt=\"why maafushi island\" class=\"wp-image-3646\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Here\u2019s a view of Maafushi from the Bikini Beach side. Notice how far the reef drop-off is from the shore\u2014I\u2019ll come back to that point shortly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Downsides_of_Maafushi\"><\/span>The Downsides of Maafushi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Important note: these are cons <strong>relative to other local islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weak bikini beach<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s small, overcrowded, and often dirty despite the locals\u2019 best efforts to keep it clean. The sheer number of tourists overwhelms it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No real house reef<\/strong> \u2013 There\u2019s almost no snorkeling right off the beach. If you look at the photo above, you\u2019ll see four Y-shaped breakwaters. The reef doesn\u2019t really begin until the open ocean, far from shore\u2014too far to swim to safely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor marine life<\/strong> \u2013 Unsurprising, given the lack of a proper reef.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Not much greenery<\/strong> \u2013 Very few palm trees and vegetation compared to greener islands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overcrowded<\/strong> \u2013 This is one of the most crowded islands in the Maldives. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Maafushi and Thoddoo are the most visited local islands by far.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>A curious fact:<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>Maafushi is home to the country\u2019s main (and possibly only) <strong>prison<\/strong>, which occupies around <strong>30% of the island and coastline<\/strong>. Maafushi is an island with plenty of accommodation options, and just as many cafes and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, there are around 80 guesthouses and 2\u20133* hotels on the island. The standard room price ranges from $50\u2013100 per night. For that price, you get a room with a large bed, air conditioning, a fridge, and a private bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Important to know:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<cite>The Maldives is not like Vietnam or Bali\u2014you can\u2019t just show up and easily find a place to stay.
