Skadar Lake is quite popular among tourists, but in my opinion, it\u2019s not the most beautiful lake in Montenegro.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n Lakes of Montenegro: General Information<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A bit of general info to better understand Montenegro\u2019s lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Montenegro is a very small country, measuring just about 200 by 250 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- At the same time, over 80% of its territory is covered by mountains<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- You can\u2019t really call Montenegro a land of lakes. Today, the country has around 40 relatively large lakes<\/strong>, most of which are mountain lakes<\/strong>. Some are artificial<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
However, not all of them are interesting for tourists\u2014some aren\u2019t even worth your time. Below is a list of the most famous and popular lakes in Montenegro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biogradsko Lake<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Located in Biogradska Gora National Park<\/strong>. I\u2019d rate this lake 6 out of 10<\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s a very beautiful and peaceful place, but it doesn\u2019t evoke overwhelming excitement. Black Lake (Crno Jezero) in Durmitor National Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
A glacial lake<\/strong> surrounded by mountains. Both the lake and Durmitor National Park are absolute must-sees<\/strong> in Montenegro. My rating: 10\/10<\/strong>. This place is a must-visit. Unlike the previous lakes, which are located in national parks, Plav Lake is just a regular lake near the Albanian border. On its shore lies the charming town of Plav<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can come here, rent an apartment, go fishing, or swim in the lake. Plav\u2019s big advantage<\/strong> is its proximity to the Accursed Mountains<\/strong>, a place that also gets 10\/10<\/strong> in my book. As for Plav Lake itself, I\u2019d give it an 8\/10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of these three lakes, Black Lake in Durmitor is the only one that\u2019s absolutely worth visiting<\/strong>\u2014the others depend on how much time you have. Now, let\u2019s take a closer look at Piva Lake and Skadar Lake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Everything You Need to Know About Skadar Lake in Montenegro<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

- It\u2019s the largest freshwater lake in the entire Balkans<\/strong>. Its approximate size: 45 by 12 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- The lake straddles the Montenegro-Albania border<\/strong>: 60% is in Montenegro, 40% in Albania<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- The lake is called “Shkod\u00ebr”<\/strong> in Albanian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Six rivers<\/strong> flow into Skadar Lake. The most famous among tourists is the Crnojevi\u0107 River<\/strong> (more on that later).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Only one river<\/strong>, the Buna<\/strong>, flows out of the lake and into the Adriatic Sea. The Buna River is just about 20 km long<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n
<\/i>The entire Skadar Lake area is a national park called Skadar National Park\u2014one of five national parks in Montenegro and the only one that\u2019s not in the mountains.<\/div>\n\n\n\nToday, Skadar Lake is a biosphere reserve and an ornithological park<\/strong>. Over 280 bird species<\/strong> live here at different times of the year. Most are migratory birds that use the lake as a stopover on their journey from European Russia and Siberia to Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Tourist Attractions at Skadar Lake<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Most of Skadar Lake\u2019s shores are swampy<\/strong>. There are few accessible spots<\/strong>, hardly any towns, and almost no architectural landmarks<\/strong>. The lake is a protected nature reserve<\/strong>, so construction is prohibited<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, there are some interesting places<\/strong> to visit. Below is a list of beautiful locations<\/strong> around Skadar Lake, along with their coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Built (or reinforced) by Petar II Petrovi\u0107-Njego\u0161 in the early 19th century, Lesendro was a strategic military outpost in Montenegro\u2019s battles against the Ottoman Turks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
