Not all tourists come to Montenegro just for the seaside. While the country is often associated with beach vacations, a staggering 82% of its territory is mountainous. That means breathtaking hikes, waterfalls, mountain lakes, deep canyons, and winding serpentine roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good to know:<\/p>\nIf you have a two-week vacation, it’s easy to plan your itinerary so that you spend seven days relaxing on the coast and the next seven exploring the country’s stunning mountains.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Key Points for a Road Trip in Montenegro:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

- Road conditions<\/strong> are excellent. Even a regular front-wheel-drive car will get you to the most remote places. (Winter is a different story, but this guide covers travel from late April to mid-November.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Traffic is light, and driving is stress-free.<\/strong> There\u2019s no aggressive behavior on the road\u2014locals drive calmly, nobody honks or cuts you off, and the police don\u2019t hassle tourists. Traffic regulations are similar to those in many European countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

Road-tripping in Montenegro means driving through mountain landscapes. This photo was taken on a rented Hyundai, all the way to the Prokletije Mountains!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n I will now provide examples of the most convenient and well-thought-out itineraries covering Montenegro\u2019s top attractions. These routes have been personally tested, both by me and by travelers I\u2019ve helped plan their trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The itineraries are looped<\/strong>, starting from Budva. You can follow a full itinerary or select specific parts. It also doesn\u2019t matter where you begin\u2014even if you start from Ulcinj, the country is small, and an extra 50\u2013100 km makes little difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looped Montenegro Road Trip Itineraries: 3, 5, and 7 Days<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Montenegro is such a compact country that even the most extensive road trip covering all major attractions will total around 700 km<\/strong>. Driving 1,000 km here would require a serious effort!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important point:<\/p>\nThis itinerary does not include coastal towns<\/strong>\u2014or at least, very few of them. Each coastal city is covered in separate travel guides with detailed time estimates and attractions. Plus, the coastal towns are easy to visit on day trips without needing an overnight stay.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For a short trip, you have two equally great<\/strong> options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both destinations are absolutely stunning<\/strong>\u2014choose based on what excites you more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Itinerary 1: Prokletije Mountains<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

- Day 1:<\/strong> Depart from Budva in the morning, arrive in Prokletije by early afternoon.\n

- Visit Ali Pasha Springs<\/strong>, the glacial lake Oko Skakavice<\/strong>, and Grlja Waterfall<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Day 2:<\/strong> Full-day hiking adventure<\/strong> on a well-marked trail.\n

- If you have extra time, you can hike another trail the following day\u2014there are plenty of options!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Day 3:<\/strong> Drive to Biogradska Gora National Park<\/strong> (2 hours).\n

- Walk the Health Trail<\/strong> around the lake, rent a boat or kayak, and even have a barbecue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
